I refer to the letter regarding UA Sha Tin cinemas (South China Morning Post, April 9). All of our cinemas are equipped with automatic hi-tech fire alarm systems. And, occasionally, hi-tech sometimes acts on its own. Certainly we regret the inconvenience to our valued patrons. All our staff are well trained through fire drills held on a regular basis. Since the majority of patrons at our Sha Tin cinemas are 90 per cent Chinese our first announcement is made in Cantonese. The Cantonese announcement is followed by an English announcement. At the time of the false alarm there were approximately 500 people watching different films at UA Sha Tin. I'm happy to say that most of these people finished watching their movies after the programme resumed. Some opted for refunds which we were happy to comply with. We at UA Cinemas are proud of the manner in which our staff have responded to our training sessions and from the bottom up our patrons are our most valuable assets followed by our staff's willingness to please. If Sandra Wyatt would contact me at 2735 4633 I would be happy to make certain that the disappointed child will be invited to enjoy the film of choice at our cinema.
