A suspected Macau triad member who fled to China before police could arrest him during the operation which netted alleged crime boss Wan Kuok-koi, was returned to the enclave by mainland police yesterday.

He was one of the targets of last weekend's crackdown which saw more than 20 suspected organised crime figures picked up in the wake of a series of murders and the bombing of police chief Dr Antonio Marques Baptista's car.

An arrest warrant for the man, Yuen Shun-ming, who is believed to have links to loansharking, was issued on Friday, the day Wan - known as 'Broken Tooth Koi' - was arrested at the Lisboa Hotel.

Sources said Yuen, 30, was also suspected of being a mid-ranking member of the enclave's 14K triad society which Wan, 43, is reputed to lead.

Yuen, nicknamed 'The Fishmonger', was arrested by Public Security Bureau officers in Zhongshan and handed over to the enclave's Judiciary Police yesterday. A security spokesman said he was likely to appear in court today.

Several Interpol alerts have been issued in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Cambodia, China and Thailand for gangsters who fled the enclave to avoid being arrested in the crackdown.
