The Government received loan requests from 258 fish farmers who lost stock because of red tide by the close of applications yesterday, while $15.1 million in emergency relief has been handed out. The Agriculture and Fisheries Department said 1,377 cheques had been issued under the emergency relief fund, in response to 1,395 applications. The maximum grant was $11,200. Licensed fish farmers are also entitled to low-interest loans of up to $500,000. An estimated 1,500 fish farmers were hit by last month's massive red tide outbreak. The cash was made available after Government injections of $200 million into the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Loan Fund and $17 million into the emergency relief fund. Five beaches were closed because of red tide yesterday: Tong Fuk, Cheung Sha Upper, Cheung Sha Lower, Tong Wan and Silvermine Bay.
