Former National People's Congress chairman Qiao Shi has visited the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, urging the city to take the lead in China's pursuit of advanced technology.

 He praised Shenzhen for its efforts and said it should speed up hi-tech programmes.

 Mr Qiao inspected a bio-technology firm and an information technology company on Tuesday, Xinhua said.

 He was accompanied by Guangdong Communist Party Secretary Li Changchun and Guangdong People's Congress Chairman Zhu Senlin.

 Mr Qiao, who formerly ranked third in the Communist Party's hierarchy, retired from all his posts in March.
