A transport company director was caught drink-driving after drowning her sorrows with beer because her boyfriend had deserted her, a court heard yesterday. Lau Lap-kwan, 27, had been left to drink on her own in a Wan Chai bar after her married lover had walked off during an argument, Eastern Court was told. She pleaded guilty to careless driving and drink-driving on April 17. She was three-and-a-half times over the legal limit. At about 5 am, police noticed Lau's zig-zagging car and tailed her from Yee Wo Street, Causeway Bay, to Victoria Park Road where she jumped a red light. Lau, who only passed her driving test last year, had difficulty speaking when the police stopped her, the court heard. 'This is based on affairs of the heart, which may not be to everyone's liking, but when it comes to public safety this kind of argument will not stand,' magistrate Garry Tallentire said. Mr Tallentire remanded Lau, who earns $35,000 a year, in custody until May 21 and requested background reports before passing sentence.
