Wong won the Philippine tour last year in one of Hong Kong's greatest sporting moments, but this year, the China National Games gold medallist failed to shine.

The 25-year-old rider said he had not really had enough time to recuperate from the nine-stage Tour of Taiwan where he finished second.

The Tour of Taiwan was held one week before the Philippine event.

'I only had one week to recuperate, which is not long enough.

'Last year, I had something like two months to recover because the Taiwan tour was held in February. This year, the Taiwan tour was held in early April which didn't do me much good.' Wong won just one stage of the Philippine tour, the 15th stage, a 157.1-km race from Agoo, La Union, to the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga.

'The weather was very hot and I felt tired during the first week.
