A mainland dissident and his family have had their permits to stay in the territory renewed for two years, it was revealed yesterday.

Yang Huang, stranded in Hong Kong since 1995, went to the Immigration Department early this month asking for a renewal. The family's original one-year stay permits expire next Friday.
Mr Yang was seen as a test case for an unknown number of similar cases.
He declined to comment on the renewal last night, although he has said he hoped to be granted permanent residency.
But he was not given permanent residency because both he and his wife had entered Hong Kong illegally.

Eddie Leung Kam-cheung, of the Hong Kong Voice of Democracy, said Mr Yang had not applied for political asylum overseas.
