FIFTEEN Hongkong students will arrive at the Pattaya Orphanage in Thailand today with a $160,000 donation in memory of a student who died in the Lan Kwai Fong tragedy.
The students from Hongkong International School (HKIS) flew to Bangkok, then travelled by train and bus to Pattaya.
The cheque, to be presented later this week, represents the sympathy of the many people in Canada, the UK and Hongkong whose lives had been touched by Jody Fullerton.
The 19-year-old was born in Canada, but lived and travelled in countries including England and France before his family moved to Hongkong. He enrolled at HKIS in 1988.
His mother, Mrs Lolly Fullerton, said: ''It is such a tribute; it is hard to believe how outstanding people's generosity has been.'' Jody went to Pattaya Orphanage last year. The one-week visit was one of the options under a school programme called Interim, through which HKIS students expand their education beyond the classroom.
''On other Interims, Jody had gone camel riding through India and rafting in Nepal - the more physical options. But his friends encouraged him to try something different so he went to the orphanage in Pattaya.
''He wasn't too enthusiastic at first and he never expected he would love it so much,'' Mrs Fullerton said.
