The two different faces of Hong Kong rugby were seen on Saturday at Aberdeen Stadium and both give much hope for the future.

We had a glimpse of the real future of local rugby when the Hong Kong Dragons - those players who are eligible to play at the Asian Games in Bangkok this December - took on the Macau Barbarians (comprising a number of local club players, including the likes of Leighton Duley and Alistair Broach) in the curtain-raiser to the Pac Rim.

Then came Hong Kong's landmark win over Canada.

While celebrations are in order over Hong Kong's first win over the Canadians, who have won the Pac Rim series ever since it began in 1996, we must press the pause button to reflect on the outcome of the Dragons game.

The Dragons lost 15-11 to Macau. While the result was disheartening, what must be more of a worry is the apparent lack of heavyweight forwards in the local team.

This will always be a problem for Hong Kong. And coach Norman Russell will have his hands tied as he tries to grapple with this situation when the SAR face China on the next two successive Saturdays at Aberdeen Stadium.

For the last quarter against Macau, the Dragons were pinned down valiantly defending their goalline. An endless sequence of scrums finally resulted in a pushover try which won the visitors the game.
