The Hong Kong men's 4 x 100 metres relay record was eclipsed in the third round of the Watson's Athletic King Championships '98 yesterday at Wan Chai Stadium, despite unseasonably hot and humid weather which saw all but one athlete drop out of the men's 10,000 metres.
The team of Chan Chin-wan, To Wai-lok, Tang Hon-sing and Chiang Wai-hung clipped 0.13 of a second off the mark they set during the second round of this series last month, but, perhaps more importantly, 0.06 of a second faster than last month's winning team from Guangxi.
In the men's 100 metres, Chiang Wai-hung ran a good time of 10.52 seconds to edge out To Wai-lok and Leung Chun-kit.
Also in fine form was Leung Tat-wai, who completed a middle-distance double in the men's 800 and 1,500.
Performances in several of the sprint events, and also the field disciplines, saw marked improvements on the results of the second round.
The heat took a heavy toll on many of the track athletes, but particularly the distance runners. In the men's 10,000 metres, only one of the five participating athletes managed to complete the gruelling race.
