All airlines with older Boeing 737 planes that may land in Hong Kong have been ordered by the Civil Aviation Department to carry out urgent checks on fuel tank wiring.

The order follows safety warnings issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States.

Chief of airworthiness standards, Leung Yu-keung, said maintenance departments of all airlines that use Kai Tak had been told of the checks. Any planes matching the administration's concerns fears would be grounded if airlines could not prove checks had been made.

It is believed that the 340 aircraft affected worldwide mainly belong to domestic airlines in the US.

The administration requires checks to be made on all 737s that have flown more than 40,000 hours.

None of the 108 planes registered in Hong Kong is affected.
