THE Government has given top priority to plans to install multi-million-dollar X-ray machines at border checkpoints as a sign of its determination to eradicate smuggling.
The Customs and Excise Department has sent officers to Germany to see how effective the system can be and whether it would be suitable for Hongkong.
It will also monitor the operation of similar systems soon to be implemented at checkpoints in Shenzhen.
The X-ray equipment under consideration is so large, lorry containers can be inspected without being unloaded, thus saving time.
The equipment is expected to be installed at Lok Ma Chau and Man Kam To border points.
However, sources said geographical restraints at the two control points might make it difficult to put the equipment in place.
