A national work meeting on Taiwan has called on mainland cadres to put more pressure on the Taipei leadership to go to the negotiating table.
The three-day meeting, chaired by the head of the Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Yunlin, is due to end in Beijing today.
Yesterday, a Beijing source said the meeting revealed the party leadership's stance on Taiwan when President Jiang Zemin meets US President Bill Clinton next month.
The meeting also spread Beijing's instructions on what cadres specialising in work on Taiwan should do to speed up reunification.
Officials attending the meeting included those working in the Taiwan affairs offices in the provinces and major cities.
Cadres in charge of foreign trade and PLA generals were also represented.
'Participants were told that in his meeting with Clinton, Jiang Zemin will probably secure the help of the American Government in putting pressure on Taipei authorities to go to the negotiating table,' the source said.
