Exchange scheme creates an East-West melting pot
The most valuable experiences students can have come not from books but from interaction with other people, participants in the MBA exchange programme at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have found.
MBA student Roger Yu Yiu-keung said learning about information systems management during a semester at Johnson Graduate School of Management in Cornell University was an important stage in his studies.
'The experience not only raised my academic performance but fostered in me an ability to see things in a larger perspective,' he said.
Jan-Daniel Neumann, an MBA exchange student from Koblenz Graduate School of Management-WHV in Germany, will spend a semester at HKUST specialising in finance.
Mr Neumann said: 'Hong Kong is a melting pot of Western and Chinese culture. It's a cross-cultural city where I feel comfortable.
'Thus it's an inter-medium where Westerners who seek Chinese [cultural] treasures should come as they will have no problem in communicating in English.' Dr Steven DeKrey, associate dean director of MBA/EMBA/MSc Programmes, School of Business and Management, HKUST, said links with universities like UCLA, Cornell and Chicago brought diversity into the classroom and strengthened students' potential.
