ACONCERT treat to reward more than 3,000 Girl Guides for their hard work in selling raffle tickets ended up as a treat for Hongkong residents and cancer-stricken children as well.

  The Girl Guides Concert, held recently at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wan Chai, was attended by more than 3,000 guides and children from the Cancer Foundation together with their parents.

  The concert featured 10 local pop singers and was broadcast live over radio.

  Lady Akers-Jones, chief commissioner of the Hongkong Girl Guides Association, said the concert was a first for encouraging guides to sell raffle tickets.

  Artists taking part were Andy Hui Chi-on, Alex To Tak-wai, Aaron Kwok Fu-shing, Dicky Cheung Wai-kin, Lui Fong, Choi Chai-man, Shirley Kwan Shuk-yee, Sandy Lam Yik-lin, Sally Yeh and Grasshopper.

  The singers, who made an appearance at a recent press conference to announce the concert, expressed support for the show and the guiding movement for its service to the community.

  Lam said she regretted not joining the guides when she was a student.

  ''It is good for young people's growth. It teaches them discipline and builds up determination in what they do,'' the star said.

    To said that although he could not join the movement ''because he was a male'', he would urge others to do more charity work.

  ''Taking part in the concert gives me a great sense of satisfaction,'' the singer said, adding that he would continue his charity efforts.

   From the last sale of raffle tickets in January and February this year, a new record of $2.3 million was raised. The money will go towards the development of the guiding movement in Hongkong.

  Meanwhile, Lady Akers-Jones encouraged young girls to join the guides.

   ''You will learn certain skills and also have opportunities to serve the community. It is also learning to be good citizens,'' she said.

  Girl Guides not only serve the community, but also conduct camps for the guiders (leaders) of the movement.

  Next month, there will be a camp in Hangzhou for the territory's guiders and their counterparts.

  The movement in Hongkong has 33,500 members, including adults. Around 31,500 members are between the ages of six and 18.

  The movement has served more than 30,000 girls and women in the territory.
