SMITH Barney has announced the appointment of Mr Raymond Lai as managing director of Smith Barney (Asia) Ltd. Mr Lai's primary responsibility is to develop Smith Barney's US equities, fixed income and commodity futures sales in Hongkong and the region. Prior to joining Smith Barney, Mr Lai was with Merrill Lynch and the ChinTung Group. KLP International has announced the appointment of Mr James Duthie as an account director from the KLP Group PLC in London. Mr Duthie has experience in marketing services and database marketing with clients, Iberia Airlines, Air UK, Peugeot, ICI, Andrex, Baby Fresh, Nestle and Fisher Price. MR Mark Travis has been named regional controller by EDS Asia-Pacific. He will also serve on the board of a number of EDS companies in the region. Mr Travis, who has been with EDS since graduating with an MBA in 1983, was previously controller of the company's health care business unit. As a senior financial executive, Mr Travis will direct financial activities and provide support to the Hongkong-based regional operations group. MR Jonathan Hardy has been appointed regional advertising manager for Fortune magazine with responsibility for Hongkong and China, Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines. Mr Hardy joins Fortune from Newsweek, where he was Hongkong manager. He previously worked for Cheney Communications in Hongkong and Haymarket Publishing in London. AMERICAN International Assurance Co (Bermuda) has appointed Mr Clement Chan as vice-president and director of agencies and Mr Sam Cheung as vice-president andassistant comptroller. Mr Chan will be responsible for agency administration and development. Mr Cheung is a fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and a graduate of the Chinese University of Hongkong. Prior to this promotion, Mr Cheung was assistant vice-president, accounts. NEW Zealand Insurance (NZI) has announced the following management changes: MR Robert Collins has been appointed regional manager - cargo. He will provide cargo marketing support to Hongkong and the region. Following his new appointment, Mr Collins will report directly to Mr Andrew Lo, who has been appointed assistant general manager - operations of NZI Hongkong. Mr Nick Helms' position has been changed from business manager to agency branch manager to reflect his position as head of the agency branch. Mr Joseph Suit, direct business manager, will join the strategic management team of NZI Hongkong. The team is responsible for formulating long-term business development strategy and overseeing the operational management of the company. Mr Suit has been with NZI for more than 20 years, and has extensive experience in all areas of company operations. Mr Jackson Tang has been appointed underwriting and marketing manager. Mr Tang will be responsible for the underwriting management of the company in addition to his present marketing duties. Mr Victor Lam has been promoted to broker branch manager. Mr Lam has 12 years' experience in the insurance industry and was previously assistant broker branch manager. SWISSOTEL, a Swissair company, has announced the promotion of Ms Heily Ma to regional sales manager in the Hongkong office. With eight years' experience in the travel and hotel industry, Miss Ma will be responsible for co-ordinating sales activities for Swissotel's 15 hotels worldwide. THE Royal Pacific Hotel has announced the following appointments the sales team. Ms Anissa Marumoto has been appointed Japanese sales manager, responsible for serving and developing the Japanese market for the hotel. Ms Marumoto speaks fluent Chinese, Japanese and English. Ms Linda Ho has been promoted to senior sales manager in charge of expanding and overseeing the corporate business for the hotel. She worked for the Excelsior Hotel and Ramada Inn for nine years. Ms Ida Chan has been promoted to sales manager, responsible for serving and developing corporate accounts. THE Stock Exchange of Hongkong has appointed Ms Ann Elizabeth Nealon as assistant director of the general policy unit of the listing division. Ms Nealon is a solicitor with over 10 years in corporate and commercial litigation with Clifford Chance in London and Linklaters & Paines in Hongkong. REUTERS East Asia has announced the appointment of Mr Graeme Barbour as operations support manager. Mr Barbour will be responsible for client-site and field technical strategy, standards, quality measurement, support and related system enhancements. He will direct the activities of the product support groups based in Singapore and Tokyo, and will also oversee communications strategy and the introduction of satellite-based services within the area. Mr Barbour joined Reuters in 1980 as a technical graduate trainee.
