Two totally different Thai resort experiences can be found on one island. For travellers to Phuket seeking tranquillity or a place for the whole family to let loose, the Le Meridien Hotel and Resort offers both with five-star accommodation at a fraction of peak season rates. From next month and continuing until September 30, a summer promotion at Le Meridien Phuket is available through the Internet ( email@example.com ). It features rooms from US$90, including tax and service charge. Suites are available at discounts of between 30 and 50 per cent on request and a stay-two-weeks, pay- one-week promotion can be negotiated through travel agents. Rates at the 109-room Le Royal Meridien Phuket Yacht Club (info*phuket-yachtclub.com) can start as low as US$130 (including taxes) compared with $330 during peak months. It currently has rooms for US$150, including an American breakfast for two. Another deal involves staying for five nights and paying for four. Samir Wildemann, general manager of Le Royal Meridien, said the hotel's remote location at the southernmost tip of the island meant guests tended to be couples in search of a tranquil setting. The hotel certainly provides that. Rooms have spacious flower- decked balconies with views of the Andaman Sea and the adjacent Nai Harn beach. 'We're not so much a family hotel. It's more people just coming here to switch off and relax to get away from the hustle of the cities,' Mr Wildemann said.
