There are several programs available which can make your on-line browsing experience different, better or more enjoyable.

 They come in the form of add-ons which extend your browser's functionality.

 Generally, they operate unobtrusively in the background and you will barely be aware of their presence until they are needed.

 The first we will look at is the broadest. NaviScope from NaviScope Software [www.naviscope.com] is an attempt to provide a suite of small utilities which can make browsing through large and complicated sites easier.

 Among things the program does is pre-fetch any Web page tagged Next or More - tags common in the search results of engines such as AltaVista and Yahoo!  NaviScope offers progress indications and stop control of all parts of a download - in other words, separate indication of the status of each image, applet and part of a page, with the ability to stop downloading any element.

 It also provides a graphical tree-view of the Web site you are visiting and a status window showing the speed of downloads and the speed of your Internet connection.

 NaviScope is a US$19.95 shareware package which can be downloaded for a 30-day evaluation. It runs on Windows 95 and NT 4.0 with Internet Explorer 3 or higher, Netscape Navigator 3 or higher or Netscape Communicator.

 The next program is a little more specific in function. FullScreen for Netscape produced by Stefano Barbato [www.webcom.com/flyingtb /fs/] is a small, $15 program which expands your view of Web pages without having to upgrade your monitor.

 It lets Netscape Navigator or Communicator operate in a full-screen mode in which the window frame, all menus and toolbars and the status bar are hidden.

 The toolbars pop-up when you move the mouse to the top of the screen, so you retain full access to all of the browser's features.

 Switching to full-screen mode is made easy by a button added to the toolbar.

 This program is ideal for Web presentations using overhead projectors because these generally work at low resolutions and screen real-estate is at a premium.

 It also can be used for some kiosk applications to provide a full-screen display of a Web site.

 Finally, we look at a program that might be of interest to parents and employers. Surfing Spy from Esm Software tracks usage of Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

 Running in the background, it logs all Web pages requested, including time of the request, URL of the request and title of the page.

 Parents can use it to keep track of their children's surfing, as can system administrators and employers who need to enforce company policies about Web usage.

 An administration tool accesses the logs, which can be cleared when they get too large. The shareware program costs US$10.
