Li Ka-shing at Hutchison Whampoa's annual general meeting on Thursday made a distinction between public housing rental units and HOS (Home Ownership Scheme) flats for sale. He said: 'I believe public housing rental units need to be built, no matter how many, even if it means having a negative impact on developers. Why? Because if there is not enough public housing where would the low-income people live? Therefore public housing needs to be built. Regarding HOS flats for sale, in principle, they should be built. But must they be built with such urgency and in such large numbers? That is something the government needs to think about thoroughly.' Mr Li was quoted in Business Post as saying the government should help Chinese banks. He was referring to local banks.
