Indonesia's elite Thomas Cup team brought relief to their strife-torn country by retaining the world's most prestigious men's team title for the third straight time following an emotionally-charged performance at Queen Elizabeth Stadium last night.

Indonesia suffered an early hiccup after losing the first singles but the country, which has been torn by rioting and political turmoil, fired on all cylinders to stave off gallant Malaysia 3-2 to lift the Thomas Cup for the 11th time.

The triumphant team will return home carrying the most meaningful prize possible back to their country that will for now forget about its recent troubles and soak up the celebrations.

The Indonesians erupted with joy when their world number four pairing Candra Wijaya and Budiarto Sigit outplayed Malaysia's world number 14 Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook 15-11, 15-12 to give Indonesia an unassailable 3-1 lead.

Lee put a smash out wide on the last point to send a band of Indonesian supporters into a joyful frenzy.

There were tears all around and doubles coach Christian Hadinata said: 'This of course will give the country relief. I was a bit worry that we would lose the match, but I had put my faith in my players. I knew they would win.' World number 12 Hendrawan, who was playing his first Thomas Cup after being called up to the squad last year, really laid the foundation for the win.
