Elitists take back seat at new-look club

There was a time when the Hong Kong Club was one of the SAR's last bastions of male chauvinism and, generally, good old fashioned colonial values.

Then something happened. Firstly, last year, the club changed its memorandum of articles to take account of the forces of political correctness.

The key change was - horror of horrors - women were for the first time allowed to join the club in their own right as members.

Just as members were starting to recover from that shock, we hear word of the latest scuttlebutt sweeping the club's hallowed corridors.

Word has it that Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) boss Lily Yam Kwan Pui-ying has just become a member of the establishment.

When we called yesterday, the club was keeping mum about who it had taken on as new members.
