A unique link to old and new
It is my pleasure to announce the 110th anniversary of the Peak Tram and the first anniversary of the Peak Tower.
The Peak Tram has been serving Hong Kong residents and international visitors since 1888. It was the only public land transport company until 1904 and is today the oldest operating public transport in Hong Kong.
Established initially to provide a convenient mode of transportation for local commuters, the Peak Tram today has evolved to become a leading tourism and recreational attraction.
From the 150,000 passengers it carried during its first year of operation, the Peak Tram was used by more than 4.2 million passengers last year.
For the past century, the Peak Tram has evolved to keep pace with the development of the territory and the changing demands of its customers.
There were two major capacity upgrades - in 1926 and 1989 - in addition to our continuous pursuit of enhanced service quality.
Always dedicated to serving tourists and the people of Hong Kong, we have invested $500 million to redevelop the Peak Tower and to renovate the Peak Tram terminal with modern facilities. The architectural beauty of the Peak Tower has made it one of the four major landmarks in Hong Kong.
The Kadoorie family's longstanding association with the Peak Tram dates back to 1905 before Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels took it over in 1971.
We are very proud that the Peak Tram maintains a unique link between the past and present of Hong Kong and we look forward to serving local residents and international visitors for many years to come.
