A man entrusted with overseeing a church was yesterday jailed for stealing $3 million from it.
Wong Kay-din, 41, found guilty on nine charges of theft, was sentenced to three years' jail by District Court Judge Peter Line.
Wong was acquitted on a further six counts of forgery.
The judge said Wong had grossly breached the trust of the church company, its directors and fellowship by using its property 'as if it were his own' to raise money to save his ailing businesses.
The court was told that Wong had been a director of the Tin Lok Baptist Church along with his late father, who founded it.
He had mortgaged its properties between 1993 and 1996 to raise loans from several finance companies.
Wong had transferred $3 million of that money into his own account to help rescue his struggling printing businesses.
