LEGISLATORS yesterday postponed discussions on the controversial plan to create a new post to head the Hongkong office in Washington.

The postponement came after the Government announced a special briefing for legislators.

The move to upgrade the original D4 post to D8 was criticised by legislators as too lavish for the outgoing Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Barrie Wiggham.

Legislators, though discontented with the last-minute announcement of a special briefing on the proposed perk for Mr Wiggham, eventually agreed to postpone the discussion.

The Deputy Secretary for Trade and Industry, Miss Denise Yue Chung-yee, dismissed suggestions that the Government was trying to delay tabling the proposal in an effort to cool criticism.

''The administration has stated very clearly that it would be willing to answer legislators' questions,'' she said.

Apart from the upgrading of the post, the package for the Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs in the US will also include a $12 million house.
