Building site workers received complaints about falling objects two weeks before an iron bar fell and killed a woman, an inquest heard yesterday. Clerk Chan Sau-ying, 32, died 12 days after being struck by a 1.55-metre bar, which fell from the 17th floor of a building in Water Street, Sai Ying Pun, on December 4, 1996. Fruit hawker Lau Yuk-wai told the hearing she had seen objects fall from the site and had warned the site supervisor to be more careful. Construction worker Kan Bun-shan told police he accidentally kicked an iron bar he was welding. Mr Kan was later sentenced to three months in jail for allowing an object to fall. Coroner Ian Thomas recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
