A CENTRAL library for Hongkong Island will be built in Causeway Bay at an estimated cost of $204 million.
The proposed locations are a site in Victoria Park and the Sports Training Centre site on Causeway Road.
Both sites are located near the commercial centre of Causeway Bay and are accessible by public transport.
The library will have a floor area of 16,000 square metres with a capacity to stock 1.1 million books, 130,000 items of audio-visual material and 270,000 bound volumes of periodicals. There will be seating for 1,800 users of the various services.
The library will be comparable to similar metropolitan libraries in other parts of the world, such as the Birmingham Library in the UK, the Milwaukee Public Library and Kansas City Public Library in the United States, and the proposed new national library of Singapore.
The proposed library will be the main library for principal collections as well as the administrative headquarters and centre of the Urban Council's library network.
