Searching the Internet for information in Chinese text has been made easy, thanks to researchers at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU).
The new system, Personal News Service (PNS), is able to catalogue news according to specific needs.
'PNS uses the content analysis method to automatically track and categorise news,' project manager at CU's Information Networking Laboratories, Ringo Lam Wing-kwan, said.
Users will be able to search for specific information using self-defined key words and phrases.
The system will then locate relevant articles from various sources, such as newspapers and magazines, and deliver them via the Internet, e-mail or fax.
'PNS prevents false jobs and drawbacks which could result from searching with a word index . . . and unlike the traditional key-word search, the system provides 100 per cent accuracy,' he said.
PNS incorporates a full-text search engine called Information Processing On Chinese (IPOC) which was developed by the university's Faculty of Engineering four years ago.
