Extramarital affairs have led to a worrying incidence of family violence in Guangzhou. Of 195 cases of murder or premeditated assault heard at Guangzhou Intermediary Court in the 18 months until the end of May, 41 were blamed on affairs, it was reported yesterday. In the 41 cases, 29 people died and 15 were seriously injured. 'Extramarital affairs have caused endless trouble,' said the Guangzhou Daily. The municipal Women's Federation said more than 80 per cent of marriage break-ups in the city were due to husbands leaving their wives for other women. In the past five years, the city's courts had handled 77 cases of illegal second marriages. During the first 15 days of a recent investigation of family violence by the municipal court and Women's Federation, nine women were beaten so badly by their husbands they needed hospital treatment, the paper said.
