Tung Chee-hwa and British Consul-General Sir Andrew Burns last night raised champagne glasses to mark the first post-handover celebration of the Queen's official birthday. In contrast to last year's celebrations at Government House, the ceremony was held in the British Council library next to the British Consulate-General in Queensway. More than 200 senior officials, diplomats, businessmen and politicians attended. Before proposing a toast to the Queen, Mr Tung hailed the development of relations with Britain now that British rule was in the past. The Chief Executive also said he was looking forward to the visit of Prime Minister Tony Blair later this year. Sir Andrew praised Mr Tung and the administration for the smooth transition.
