IF one night in Bangkok makes a hard man as humble as the Broadway song suggests, there is now a possible - if risky - solution.

Black-market supplies of Viagra, the miracle impotency cure, are sweeping the city, sparking fears some men could risk heart attacks if they do not first see a doctor.

Its manufacturer, Pfizer, this week received restricted approval from Thailand's Food and Drug Administration to release the drug - the first such backing in the region - but as it prepares official supplies, black marketeers have stolen a march.

Dr Ian Brookes, Pfizer manager for Thailand and Burma, said: 'This is disturbing news. It is not aspirin. Appropriate medical checks are needed.

'Anyone taking Viagra should take it in consultation with a doctor. Sexual activity is strenuous. If you are elderly, it may not be appropriate to commence sexual activity immediately.' This week the US Food and Drug Administration, which first approved the drug in late March, said 16 men had died after taking Viagra - some during intercourse.

Most died of heart attacks or strokes and the drug has yet to be named as the direct cause.
