A 40-year-old man who skipped bail in connection with a deception case was last night rescued from outside his 19th-floor flat in Tai Po. Fong Cheong-mau had spent almost 12 hours on the ledge threatening to kill himself after police officers looking for him went to his home in Hang Tsui House, Fu Hang Estate, at about 11am. His wife answered the door. Fong stood on the ledge outside the window shouting: 'I'll jump if you come near me.' Police negotiators and firefighters were despatched and an air cushion was inflated. Firefighters lowered themselves with ropes and pulled him to safety at about 10.50pm. The man allegedly cheated a friend of $120,000 by claiming he could help get the friend's mainland wife a one-way permit. He was arrested last year, released on bail of $5,000 and required to appear in Sha Tin Court on June 6, 1997. He failed to turn up. Yesterday was the first time he had come home since then.
