Solicitor-General Daniel Fung Wah-kin has to decide this week whether he intends to stay on in his post. Senior Counsel Mr Fung, 45, who joined the then Legal Department in 1994 reportedly with an eye to securing the top post, was thought to have decided to leave the Government after Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung Oi-sie was appointed. But Mr Fung - who has expressed a desire to study Chinese law, and whose contract expires in October - was asked to stay on by Miss Leung, 60, after she was treated for cancer. Miss Leung has indicated one of her main tasks during her three-year contract was to identify a successor. An official said that while the department would like Mr Fung to renew his contract, it was prepared for him to leave.
