Youngsters can exercise their way to good health during the school holidays, thanks to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (APA). APA's School of Dance has organised various summer dance courses to keep young feet and mind busy. Two categories are being offered - continuing education courses and junior classes. The former are for adults and include ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, Chinese classical and folk dance at various levels. These are available during the day or in the evening. There are also the popular ballroom dance and Singing for Musicals courses. Two new programmes - Image Lab and Contact Improvisation - are being launched this year. Applicants for intermediate or advanced level courses must have a minimum of one to two years' training for the style they are going to study. The school has also organised a series of courses for school teachers wishing to be dance trainers. These include a children's dance workshop for kindergarten and infant teachers and a dance workshop for those from primary schools. Junior courses include ballet, jazz, Chinese, folk, tap, modern and ballroom dance. There will also be Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus classes and lessons for young beginners. Four courses have been designed for secondary school students - Summer Dance, elementary jazz, modern and ballroom dance. The summer courses provide a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to join gifted dancers in Hong Kong's premier performing arts institution with its international staff and outstanding facilities. The 10 dance and movement studios, each equipped with sprung floors, mirrors, bars and audio-visual facilities, are perfect venues for professional training. Course fees range from $300 to $1,800. Members of the Society of the Academy for Performing Arts get a 10 per cent discount. Detailed information and application forms are now available at the APA reception. Courses run from July 13 to August 22 and applications will be accepted from Monday. For inquiries, call 2584-8541.
