Daniel Fung Wah-kin is to stick to his decision to quit as Solicitor-General. Senior Counsel Mr Fung, whose contract expires in October, has told friends he has no ambition to succeed Elsie Leung Oi-sie as Secretary for Justice. Miss Leung pleaded with Mr Fung to stay on after her recent treatment for cancer of the colon. But Mr Fung, 45, is understood to consider his mission to assist her in running the department accomplished. His interest is in his profession, not in politics, friends have been told. Mr Fung plans to conduct research in constitutional development in China at Harvard University. Appointed the first local solicitor-general in 1994, he is understood to have suggested a number of candidates to succeed him. Law Draftsman Tony Yen Yuen-ho is among them. Mr Fung has told friends there was no deadline to inform Miss Leung, 60, of his final decision. Some officials had suggested he would have been recommended as the next justice secretary if he had decided to stay on.
