Freezing senior officials' wages would hit the economy by encouraging private sector employers to follow suit, it was claimed. Organising secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Mung Siu-tat, said: 'The move will not help solve economic problems nor will it stimulate economic activities. 'With the Government taking the lead to freeze wages, the private sector will follow and a chain reaction will result. People's desire to consume and invest will be lowered further.' He said the Government should instead focus on creating jobs. But legislator-elect Chan Yuen-han of the Federation of Trade Unions praised the measure, saying it showed the officials were 'willing to share the pain with the public'.
