Economy plan more expensive

I am a Hutchison Telecom subscriber and am concerned about 'economy' phone plans that may end up costing customers more.

Last November, I received a call from a Hutchison Telecom customer services officer who was 'concerned' I was paying too much for my phone plan at the time. To cut costs, he suggested I should subscribe to an alternative flat rate package that cost $280 a month for 230 free minutes. In January, when the bill for December arrived, the statement showed I owed the company $377.90 while I had over nine hours of 'free minutes' available.

While I was assured the plan would save me money, it did completely the opposite as when my usage of the phone decreased, the size of my bills increased. This plan has cost me at least $400 extra over two months.

Also in January, my wife (who is on the Hutchison Telecom phone plan registered under my name) received a call from another customer services officer who asked whether she would be interested in the same plan recommended to me earlier. While my wife agreed to give it a try, Hutchison Telecom had changed the plan and drew funds from my bank account (through auto-pay) without notifying me the registered subscriber.

Would Hutchison Telecom care to explain why it gets its clients to subscribe to plans that are said to be cheaper but are actually more costly? Also, can it change its clients' phone plans without their authorisation? Also, why are its frontline customer services officers so rude and unhelpful? NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
