The $44 billion package to rescue the economy has earned the Chief Executive an extra 2.5 percentage points in public support rating.

But the interim increase, recorded on Tuesday in a University of Hong Kong survey, failed to stop support for Tung Chee-hwa from plunging to a new low on a monthly basis.

Average support for Mr Tung stands at 55.4 per cent in June, the lowest since the handover.

When the first of the three surveys in June was conducted on June 3 and 4, he was given a 53.6 per cent rating.

This climbed slightly to 55 per cent in the middle of the month and then to 57.5 per cent on Tuesday.

The Government, policy secretaries and Executive Councillors have seen better interim gains from the multibillion package than Mr Tung.
