Construction of a stadium, market and study rooms in Fanling may be delayed because of the decision to freeze land sales for nine months, it emerged yesterday. The 1.26-hectare Provisional Regional Council site was planned to be auctioned in April. Assistant Director of Regional Services Lam Kam-kwong said he would try to clarify the issue with the Lands Department. 'Until the Chief Executive announced the land sales suspension on Monday, the Lands Department had been giving us a very clear message that they would auction the land next April,' Mr Lam said. 'But now as the queue for land sales stacks up, I don't know whether our site will go to auction as scheduled.' The project, including a market, stadium, offices and other facilities, was delayed last year when the Lands Department changed land use to allow flats to be built on top of the complex. Josephine Chan Shu-ying, of the Democratic Party, urged the council to fight for an on-time construction of the complex.
