Police Tactical Units and 300 extra officers have been called in to prevent people from flocking to Kai Tak on the night of July 5 to watch the relocation and take last-minute pictures.
The public has been warned to stay away from Kai Tak unless they are flying out. Several roads will be closed for the overnight move of 1,200 vehicle-loads of equipment to Chek Lap Kok.
The top two floors of Kai Tak car park will be closed, after thousands of families and aviation buffs crammed in to take souvenir pictures and 'plane-spot' in the past week.
'There are people jostling for camera positions, people holding children over the ledge to get them in front of a plane leaving - frankly, this is dangerous. This is the reason we have decided to close the car park,' said Police Operations Superintendent Steve Wordsworth yesterday.
Contingency plans include 300 extra police in the area on standby and two platoons of tactical unit officers working near Kai Tak on July 5. Forty officers will be stationed on the rooftop car park to stop people entering.
Those who have to go to Kai Tak on July 5 should enter off Olympic Avenue from Kowloon City, or from the up-ramp at Prince Edward Road adjacent to the Airport Hotel. A section of Concorde Road to the east of the Passenger Terminal Building, Easter Road and Cargo Circuit will be closed from 5.30pm.
