When David Chu Yu-lin planned his post-handover party a year ago, he could hardly have been expected to predict what would upset him most would be the size of the icing on his cake.
Hosting a party at the Furama Hotel, legislator-elect Mr Chu was dismayed to find that the size of his sarcastic message - The Death of Hong Kong - on a cake replica of the cover of Fortune magazine was not as big as he had expected.
He ordered hotel staff to remove the icing - then replaced the words himself.
Fellow Hong Kong Progressive Alliance members Ambrose Lau Hon-chuen and Choy So-yuk said the move was intended to show the pre-handover pessimists that they had to eat their words.
Mr Chu said: 'Clearly, and it is a matter of fact, many pessimistic and some morbid predictions were simply wrong.' But he said some optimistic predictions made by some people, including himself, had not been on target either. 'Thanks to the Asian financial crisis, we have all been humbled and brought down to earth by the recent events.
'Hong Kong is down, but not out,' he said.
