Movie star Chow Yun-fat lost about $300,000 in valuables when his home in Kowloon Tong was burgled early yesterday.

 Chow, 42, and his wife Jasmine Tan Hui-lian, were abroad when the bedroom of their two-storey house in Cumberland Road was ransacked.

 Chow's 64-year-old father-in-law called police at around 6.50am after discovering signs of a break-in and an open safe in Chow's bedroom.

 It is not known how many burglars took part in the raid, but it is believed they broke in through a window.

 About $300,000 worth of valuables were believed to have been stolen, but the exact loss will need confirmation from Chow, who is in Canada shooting The Corrupter, with Boogie Nights star Mark Wahlberg.

 Closed-circuit television cameras had been installed on the four corners of Chow's house which is surrounded by a three-metre-high wall.

 But neighbours said it would be easy to climb into the house from an adjacent hotel.

 It is understood Chow had been thinking of moving from the house after its location was made public.

 But in February the address of his new house in Clear Water Bay was publicised in Sudden Weekly magazine.

 The Chows sued the magazine for allegations it made in the same issue and last month won an out-of-court settlement for $300,000.

 In The Corrupter, Chow plays a Chinatown cop who turns to crime after amassing huge gambling debts with a triad leader.
