Airport-style X-ray machines for guests' luggage were installed at Hunghom's Harbour Plaza Hotel last night to prepare for President Jiang Zemin's arrival this afternoon.

VIP protection unit officers are expected to be stationed outside the presidential suite.

Boats will be kept away from the hotel and the Convention and Exhibition Centre from 6pm today to midnight on Friday.

Mr Jiang will be ferried by catamaran from the hotel to the PLA's Stonecutters Island naval base on Thursday before leaving from Chek Lap Kok airport.

The exclusion zones are also needed for the protection of US President Bill Clinton, who is expected to take a 45-minute sightseeing ferry trip on Friday evening.

It is understood all the Star Ferry crew members responsible for Mr Clinton's trip will be vetted and have their names registered.
