The recent appearance of President's Choice, one of Canada's best-known food brands, in local supermarkets has been whetting expat appetites.
President's Choice sources products from top manufacturers and sells them under its premium label. The range includes everything from cookies to tortilla chips, and sales are booming, according to Logan Taylor, regional managing director for Park 'n Shop supermarkets.
The chain stocks about 50 items and plans to increase that number to 120. Products now available include Decadent Double Choc Chip Cookies, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, salad dressings and dips.
'We have a policy of bringing products from countries that produce high-quality foods and have large expatriate communities in Hong Kong,' Mr Taylor said. 'Now we have the best-known brand from Canada.' That was attracting a lot of expat traffic but also many Hong Kongers with links to these communities, he said.
Mr Taylor learned of President's Choice while working in Britain and required little persuading when he was approached by trade officials at the Canadian Consulate in Hong Kong who suggested giving the brand a try.
