A head of state who exudes a common touch and yet retains the dignity of office is the impression that Mr Clinton left after appearing on a popular radio phone-in.

Few residents knew he was to be guest-of-honour on Shanghai Radio 990's most popular programme, Citizens and Society, as little publicity was given by the local media.

Those who tuned in were pleasantly surprised to find the President refreshingly friendly and at ease talking to the common people during the 50-minute programme, which usually has 10 million listeners.

As well as talking about politics, Mr Clinton took questions on how he keeps fit, his tip for the World Cup (Brazil), education, trade and business, and changing views of Americans on China.

Asked how he managed to stay looking so healthy, Mr Clinton said: 'When I was in college, I liked to play basketball and I liked to jog.' Musician He Baoqun said: 'This is unprecedented in Shanghai, a head of state talking to the common people on a radio talk-show.

'He comes across as friendly and yet retains his poise as a leader of a big country.' Another listener said: 'This way of reaching out to the people is effective and simple. If Chinese leaders, especially those who need to implement policies, follow this method of reaching out to people, that would be great.' Mike McCurry, White House spokesman, said Mr Clinton enjoyed his radio session.
