Betty Tung Chiu Hung-ping, wife of the Chief Executive, appealed to the public to join the Volunteer Movement and help make Hong Kong a more caring place.
Mrs Tung, as volunteer-in-chief, officiated at the opening ceremony of the Volunteer Parade at Sha Tin Racecourse.
More than 6,000 volunteers participating in the parade went out to render various services throughout the territory.
They have already pledged a total of three million hours of voluntary service, well exceeding the initial target of one million hours.
Mrs Tung praised the volunteers for helping the less fortunate.
The parade was the highlight of the Volunteer Movement initiated by the Social Welfare Department with the support of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.
