The train service to the new airport ran smoothly yesterday - for those who could get a ticket.

Passengers wanting to take the Airport Express at the airport station discovered many of the ticket machines out of order.

Software problems knocked out some of the machines. Others accepted notes and then refused to give change, while others refused to accept notes forcing passengers to feed $70 in coins into the machines.

MTRC chairman Jack So Chak-kwong said any major new line would take a few days to settle. He said he believed the problem would be resolved 'in a few days'.

Only four of the 13 ticketing machines in the main arrival hall were operating. And only three of the five Value Adding Machines for Octopus smart cards were operational.

Maureen Lowney, who arrived on the flight from New York City, said she was surprised to find the few working machines were not issuing change.

'Luckily we had some money on us. This could become a big problem as I see there are already queues building up,' she said.
