For the benefit of Andy Ram (South China Morning Post, June 30), who 'regrets the demise' of the BBC World Service, and for anyone else who shares his confusion, I would like to point out that the World Cup commentary bought by TVB Pearl is provided by the BBC, and not its World Service.
The BBC is a national broadcasting corporation, funded by the British people through TV licence fees. If TVB Pearl, or any other company, chooses to buy this British product, it does so in the full knowledge that it is indeed aimed primarily at a domestic audience.
Whilst I am pleased to read that Mr Ram values the excellent World Service provided by the BBC, he is quite wrong to criticise the national broadcaster for providing a service for the people who pay for it.
