Water quality worsens

Water quality deteriorated last week with two more beaches - Stanley Main and Middle Bay - falling from the good category to fair.

The Environmental Protection Department said that of 37 beaches, only six were found to have good water quality compared with eight the previous week. The beaches are classified into four grades.

Good: South Bay, Lo So Shing, Cheung Sha Upper, Hap Mun Bay, Hung Shing Yeh and Kiu Tsui.

Fair: Turtle Cove, Pui O, Stanley Main, Tung Wan, Cheung Chau, St Stephen's, Kwun Yam Wan, Chung Hom Kok, Discovery Bay, Middle Bay, Clear Water Bay 1st, Repulse Bay, Clear Water Bay 2nd, Deep Water Bay, Trio (Hebe Haven), Cheung Sha Lower, New Cafeteria, Tong Fuk and Golden Beach.

Poor: Big Wave Bay, Tung Wan, Ma Wan, Shek O, Old Cafeteria, Hairpin, Kadoorie, Silvermine Bay, Butterfly and Silverstrand.

Very poor: Casam, Hoi Mei Wan, Gemini and Lido.
