After impressing television audiences with his acting ability, Hawick Lau is proving he has other marketable talents.

  Better known as the good son On in TVB's popular Cantonese sitcom Kindred Spirit, the 23-year-old has just released his first Canto-pop album, A Boy's Story.

  In many ways A Boy's Story could be the story of On, the youngest in the fictional Lee family, who is a happy young man on the brink of adulthood.

  The album's six tracks, produced by Clarence Chang and Van Lok, focus on love, a theme close to the hearts of most young people.

  Lau is flattered that many have compared his voice to mega-star Leon Lai's.

  'I am pleased with the tunes, which are light-hearted and relaxed,' he says.

   Lau has followed the proven formula of actor-turned-singer, like Lai and Leo Ku before him.

 He agrees his television persona will provide a huge boost for his fledgling singing career, but hopes the public recognises he has some singing ability.

 Lau was born in Hong Kong and left for Canada when he was 14 to complete his high school education.

  His first brush with fame was in 1993, when he won a national Chinese singing competition in Canada. The following year, while he was studying architecture at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Canada, he came home on holiday and was spotted by TVB. The rest is history.

 Lau's acting talent and confidence in front of the camera come from his father, veteran actor Lau Dan, who plays his father in Kindred Spirit.

 'I enjoy the thrill of being on stage being watched by hundreds of people,' says Lau.

 Hawick's father has given his son a guiding hand in the tough world of show business.

 'He has always advised me to seek and treasure every opportunity I get,' Lau says.

 Meanwhile, Lau is working hard at his new career, and is learning to play the guitar. He says he is strongly influenced by soul music.

 Lau signed with Sony Music in 1995 and late last year made his first album in Putonghua, for the Taiwanese market.
