Hyder Consulting has won a pioneering consultancy deal to study the feasibility of introducing intelligent transport systems on Hong Kong's roads.
The contract will be confirmed today by Assistant Commissioner for Transport (Technical Services) Li Shu-ming at a Transport Department briefing.
The investigation is believed to be the first in the world that will look at introducing sophisticated traffic control systems in an entire city area.
Pilot schemes have been introduced on the M25 motorway in Britain and cities in Japan and the United States.
Hyder is leading four other consultants - Adivantech, Ian Catling Consultancy, Denton Hall and Omni Link Enterprises - on the nine- to 12-month study, which starts this month.
The group will assess present and future surveillance technologies to see which are best suited to Hong Kong's traffic conditions.
